How to Add and Use a VPN

A VPN helps protect your internet connection and may improve streaming when an internet provider is slowing or restricting video traffic.

Step 1: Choose a VPN Service

NoteYou must create an account directly with the VPN provider. The VPN subscription is separate from your DirectConnect service.
  1. 1From the Fire TV home screen, select Find and then Search.
  2. 2Search for your VPN provider.
  3. 3Select the official VPN application and choose Download.
  4. 4Open the application.
  5. 5Sign in using your VPN username and password.
  6. 6Select a nearby U.S. location and press Connect.
  7. 7Once connected, return to the Fire TV home screen.
  8. 8Open the DirectConnect streaming application.
  1. 1Open the Google Play Store.
  2. 2Search for your VPN provider.
  3. 3Select the official application and press Install.
  4. 4Open the VPN application and sign in.
  5. 5Select a nearby U.S. location and press Connect.
  6. 6Return to the home screen and open the DirectConnect application.

  4. 4Open the application and sign in.
  5. 5Allow the application to add a VPN configuration when prompted.
  6. 6Select a nearby U.S. location and press Connect.
  7. 7Open the DirectConnect streaming application.
  1. 1Roku does not currently allow VPN applications to be installed directly on the device.
  2. 2A VPN must instead be configured through a compatible Wi-Fi router or shared from another device.
  3. 3Contact your VPN provider for router-specific setup instructions.

Recommended Settings

  • ✓Choose the closest available server for the best speed.
  • ✓Use a U.S. server unless otherwise instructed.
  • ✓Connect the VPN before opening the streaming application.
  • ✓If streaming buffers, disconnect and try another nearby server.
  • ✓Avoid using free VPN services because they often have limited speed and data.
